I found this recipe on an old newspaper clipping, pressed into one of my grandmother's cookbooks. I haven't ventured to make this recipe myself yet, but I figured it was worth transcribing before it disintegrated! One thing I noticed - Most apple bread recipes I've seen have extra sugar added, but this one doesn't. Some apples are definitely sweeter than others though. Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening |
2 eggs, well-beaten |
1 cup apple, diced very fine |
1/4 cup sour milk |
2 cups flour |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1/2 teaspoon vanilla |
1/2 cup nuts |
Directions:
1. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. 2. Mix with shortening, eggs, apples and sour milk. 3. Add vanilla and nuts. 4. Bake in loaf pan 1 hour at 350°F. |
