A dear friend of mine gave me this recipe years ago. I haven't made them in a while, but I remember being very pleased with their taste the first time I tried this recipe. Ingredients:
1 cube butter |
1 tbs. shortening |
4 eggs |
2 cups sugar |
4 1/2 cups flour |
3 tsp. baking powder |
2 tsp. anise seed |
1 tsp. salt |
1 tsp. vanilla |
1/2 cup milk |
1 cup blanched almonds or walnuts chopped or both |
Directions:
1. Cream butter, shortening, eggs and sugar. 2. Add anise seeds, vanilla and nuts. 3. Starting with flour, add sifted flour, baking powder and salt alternately with milk. 4. Make 2 long rolls about two inches wide. 5. Put on floured board and work dough lightly with a little additional flour. 6. Bake rolls on cookie sheet about 25 minutes at 350 degrees. 7. When slightly brown, remove from oven and cut each roll diagonally about 3/4-inch wide. Turn each cookie on side and toast each side in oven about five more minutes until brown. 8. Cool on wire rack. |
