On Sunday nights during the fall, we have this for supper. I pour milk on mine.....that's the Pennsylvania Dutch way to eat it. Ingredients:
2 cups water |
1 1/2 cups sugar |
1/4 tsp cinnamon |
1/4 tsp nutmeg |
2 cups flour |
2 tsp baking powder |
3/4 cup shortening |
1/2 cup milk |
6 baking apples |
Directions:
1. combinie 1st 4 ingredients for the syrup-mix cook 5 minutes remove from heat. 2. cut shortening into flour and baking powder; add milk all at once, stir until flour is moistened. 3. on floured surface roll into squares 4. core, peel 6 apples. 5. place an apple on top of the dough squares. sprinkle generously with additional sugar and cinnamon. dot with butter 6. moisten edges of pastry 7. bring corners to center and pinch edges together 8. place 1 inch apart in ungreased 9 x 13 pan 9. pour syrup over dumplings 10. bake 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes 11. to serve.....scoop some of the syrup and drizzle over warm apple dumpling |
