Ingredients:
1/2 cup shortening |
2 cups sugar |
3 eggs, beaten |
2 teaspoons baking soda |
1 cup buttermilk |
1/2 cup cocoa |
1 cup boiling water |
3 cups all-purpose flour |
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg |
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves |
1 medium apple, peeled and finely chopped |

Directions:
1. Cream shortening and sugar in a large mixing bowl; beat well. Add eggs, mixing well; set aside. 2. Dissolve soda in buttermilk; set aside. Dissolve cocoa in boiling water, stirring until well blended; set aside. 3. Combine flour and spices; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk and cocoa mixtures, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir in apple. 4. Pour batter into 4 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely. 5. Spread filling between layers; spread top and sides of cake with frosting. Garnish top of cake with Marzipan fruit. |
