(For 40-Pound Dog) After all the tainted pet food stories in the news lately, I thought some people might be interested in making their own pet food. I found this recipe in the Toronto Star. ***Adapted from ï¿1/2Small Animal Clinical Nutritionï¿1/2 by Hillï¿1/2s Pet Nutrition Veterinary Consultation Service (courtesy of Rice Village Animal Hospital).***
Ingredients:
6 ounces 80% lean ground beef
2 teaspoons chicken fat or 2 teaspoons beef fat or 2 teaspoons vegetable oil or 2 teaspoons fish oil
1 1/3 cups cooked rice
1 cup all-bran cereal
3/4 teaspoon ground bone meal (or dicalcium phosphate)
1/4 teaspoon potassium chloride
1 (9 g) tablet vitamins (human adult vitamin-mineral tablet, *see note)
Directions:
1. Fry the beef in fat (do not drain).
2. Combine beef with the remaining ingredients except for the tablet.
3. Mix well.
4. Serve with the tablet (either in pill form or pulverized and thoroughly mixed with the food).
5. *Note: Feed your dog 1 tablet a day.
