A co worker from Costa Rica made this for a party. I love it in the summer. He just added sugar until he was happy with the sweetness. I have made some additions to the recipe but I always think of him when I make it. I have experimented with the type of soda and fruit rums/vodkas and I have liked them all! Adan used orange sode so that is what I listed. You want a robust red wine to stand up to the additions. Ingredients:
1 (750 ml) bottle cabernet sauvignon wine |
1 (12 ounce) can orange soda |
1 ounce of orange liquer like triple sec |
1/2 cup rum or 1/2 cup vodka |
1 ounce of marschino cherry juice |
1/4-1/2 cup granulated sugar |
1 red delicious apple, diced (medium dice) |
1 large orange, sliced thin |
1 lemon, sliced thin |
13 maraschino cherries |
ice, at serving time |
Directions:
1. One hour before serving slice the citrus and then dice the apple. Put apples in a small bowl. Squeeze a couple of the lemon slices over the apple to coat with juice . Toss the apples with the lemon juice. Pour liquids into a large pitcher and stir. Put all of the chopped apple, 2 lemon slices, and 3 orange slices, and appoximately 5 marschino cherries in the pitcher. Don't squeeze the citrus you want it in a pretty ring. Stir and taste. You need to add sugar about 2 TBS at a time, stir and taste, to get to your sweetness preference. I dump in a 1/4 cup sugar and then go from there but I like sweet sweet. The remainder of your citrus and cherries will be for the glass garnish. Refrigerate for an hour to make sure the sugar dissolves completely. Serve over ice with fruit garnish. I love the fizz from the soda but I have also drank leftovers the next evening and they are still tasty. |
